A well-stocked kit and a few habits make winter breakdowns far less stressful.

Published · MyTow

Your winter kit

  • Ice scraper and snow brush
  • Small shovel and traction mats or sand
  • Booster cables
  • Warm blanket, gloves and hat
  • Flashlight with spare batteries
  • Phone charger
  • Water and non-perishable snacks
  • Warning triangles or flares

Before you drive

  • Keep at least half a tank of fuel
  • Install winter tires
  • Have your battery tested before the cold sets in
  • Clear all snow from the roof, windows and lights

If you get stuck

Stay with your vehicle. Run the engine sparingly for heat and make sure the exhaust pipe is clear of snow to avoid carbon monoxide build-up.
