Flatbed vs Wheel-Lift Towing

Both methods are common. The right one depends on your drivetrain, clearance and vehicle condition.

Published · MyTow

What is flatbed towing?

A flatbed truck has a deck that tilts down so the vehicle can be pulled or driven on. All four wheels sit on the deck, so none turn during transport.

What is wheel-lift towing?

A wheel-lift truck raises either the front or rear wheels off the ground while the other axle rolls. It's quick to hook up and works well in tight spaces.

When flatbed is usually preferred

  • All-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive vehicles
  • Lowered or low-clearance cars
  • Vehicles with wheel, axle or drivetrain damage
  • Longer-distance transport

When wheel-lift can work

  • Two-wheel-drive vehicles in good condition
  • Short distances
  • Tight parking areas where a flatbed can't fit

Check your owner's manual

Manufacturers often publish towing guidance for their vehicles. When in doubt, mention your drivetrain in your request and ask for a flatbed.
