What to Do After a Car Accident in Ontario

Safety first, then documentation, then decisions about towing and repairs.

Check for injuries

If anyone is hurt, call 911 immediately. Don't move injured people unless they are in immediate danger.

Make the scene safe

Turn on hazard lights. If the vehicles can be moved and no one is injured, move them out of live lanes.

Report when required

In Ontario, collisions involving injuries, suspected criminal activity, or damage above the provincial reporting threshold must be reported to police. In the GTA, minor collisions are often reported at a Collision Reporting Centre. Check current requirements with your local police service.

Document everything

  • Photos of all vehicles and the scene
  • Other driver's name, licence, plate and insurance
  • Witness contact details

Choose where your vehicle goes

You can decide where your vehicle is towed — such as your preferred repair shop. Get pricing information before agreeing to a tow, and contact your insurer.
