Locked Out of Your Vehicle? What to Do

Being locked out is frustrating but rarely dangerous. This guide covers how to confirm the situation, why professional assistance is the right path, and when a lockout becomes urgent.

Confirm the situation

Before anything else, check every door and the trunk, and confirm whether a second key is available. It is easy to miss a door that is already unlocked, and a spare key at home is usually the simplest solution.

Stay safe and legal

Make sure you are in a safe location and remain clearly visible if you are near traffic. Do not attempt to force a door open yourself, as this can damage seals, glass and trim, and it may not be legal in every situation.

When a lockout is urgent

If a child, a pet or a vulnerable person is locked inside, or if the vehicle is in danger from heat or cold, treat it as an emergency and call 911 for help immediately.

Requesting professional assistance

MyTow providers use non-destructive entry tools designed to protect your vehicle. You will usually be asked to show identification and proof that the vehicle is yours before entry is attempted, for your own security.
