How Towing Pricing Works in Ontario

Towing prices are not one fixed number. This guide explains the factors that commonly affect what a tow costs in Ontario and how estimates and invoices are meant to work together.

There is no single price for a tow

The cost of towing depends on the situation. A short move from a parking lot is very different from a highway recovery that needs special equipment. This guide does not publish average prices, because quoting a single number would be misleading.

Factors that commonly affect price

  • Distance between the pickup point and the destination.
  • The type of vehicle, including its size, weight and whether it can roll or steer.
  • Whether the situation needs special equipment, such as a flatbed or a heavy-duty unit.
  • The circumstances of the service, including any extra labour required.
  • Applicable taxes and any authorized additional charges.

Estimate, quoted amount and invoice

It helps to understand the difference between the stages of pricing. An estimate is an informed prediction before work begins. A quoted amount is a firmer figure agreed in advance. The final invoice is what you are actually billed once the work is done.

Where possible, ask for the terms in writing and confirm what is included so the invoice at the end matches your expectations.

Ontario protections

Ontario rules around towing include requirements intended to give drivers clearer pricing information. Our companion guide on Ontario towing rights explains consent, documentation and invoices.
